Charter schools in Arizona are public, state-funded educational institutions. Charter schools were created through legislation in 1994 and contract with a school district or the State Board for Charter Schools to provide educational services. Charter schools provide parents and students with an academic alternative to traditional school settings, without having to charge tuition. All charter schools are held to the same high academic standards as district schools and award high school diplomas that are equal in value to those of district schools.
